A non-governmental organization (NGO) plans to host various sporting events to keep children in the area busy during the long December holidays.

Known as the Center for the Study of Adolescents (CSA) operating in Budalang’i Constituency, the NGO is concerned that holidays are rife with activities that expose children to immoral behaviour that might ruin their future, and therefore the need to keep them busy throughout the period.

In an interview with Education News after hosting a sensitization forum for various local groups recently, the leaders led by Susan Mutenyo and Budalang’i village administrator Jacob Ojiambo said children below the age of 18 in the area have been known to engage in drugs and substance abuse.

“Cases of children aged eighteen from Bunyala Sub-county engaging in drugs and substance abuse have reached alarming levels. There is urgent need to put effective measures in place to ensure their safety during the long third term holiday or else they will end up ruining their futures,” said Mutenyo.

The two leaders said effective modalities have to be put in place that will ensure the safety of children especially in times when they have no activities to occupy them.

She appealed to education stakeholders in the region to support the organization’s plans in kind.

“We are urging parents, education stakeholders and other well-wishers to support us in our ambitious plans for our children during this long December holiday,” she said.
