NGO out to empower female students in Kisumu through soccer

A non-governmental organization in Kisumu has initiated a programme through sports where young ladies in learning institutions are mentored and capacity built.

The Kenya Female Advisory Organization (KEFEADO) through the programme dubbed Dadaz Na Soccer and Sports for Change has targeted young ladies in Vocational Training Centers (VTCs) where they are mentored through use of soccer.

KEFEADO Executive Director Esther Oketch said over the weekend that the programme targets to mentor girls to take up soccer seriously and enhance the capacity of young ladies in the wake of challenges.

Speaking at Akado VTC in Kisumu at the commencement of a soccer tournament, Oketch said over 400 ladies will take part in the event this year.

Oketch said over 3,000 ladies have passed through the programme since its inception four years ago.

She said ladies from other counties apart from Kisumu have also benefited from the programme.

Oketch said they gauge the teams through consistency adding that top players and soccer officials from Kisumu County have come from the event

She said they have been working with partners such as county governments to strengthen the programme further.

The incoming County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Sports Farida Salim urged the ladies to shun activities that could ruin their lives.

“There is always a time for everything. Keep away from reckless sexual behavior,” she said.

Another incoming CECM Beatrice Odongo urged the ladies to focus on their studies first.
