Hundreds of children in Mukuru slums have received essential support through a non-governmental organization’s initiative, which includes free tuition and food.
The Mukuru Promotion Centre, under the direction of Mary Kileen, says the over 400 children are fed and taught as part of a programme designed to deter them from engaging in detrimental activities like substance abuse.
The director emphasized the initiative’s goal of keeping the children away from drugs and other harmful habits.
The programme ensures that the children receive meals every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, contributing to their well-being and fostering a positive environment in the challenging context of the Mukuru informal settlement.
Elsewhere, 800 young individuals have been granted accreditation certificates by the National Construction Authority (NCA) to enhance their access to employment opportunities.
The issuance of these certificates follows a one-week training programme facilitated by Laikipia Woman Representative Jane Kagiri.
Prior to this initiative, artisans had expressed grievances about facing obstacles in participating in the affordable housing programme due to the absence of certification from the NCA.
