New vocational training centre launched to bridge skills gap in Kakuma

A new vocational training centre, Namelon Training Institute, has been launched in Kakuma, Turkana County, to equip women, youth, and other vulnerable groups with technical skills aimed at boosting employment and self-reliance.

The launch was presided over by Turkana County Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus, alongside representatives from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the German Embassy, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and the Royal Embassy of the Netherlands, as well as county and Sub-county officials.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Erus lauded the partnership between the County Government, IFC, and development partners, noting that it had created new opportunities for inclusive growth and host-refugee integration.

“The impact is visible. New institutions and enterprises are empowering our people. I urge all beneficiaries to leverage this support to expand their ventures and create more opportunities,” he said.

County Secretary Amb. Dr. Richard Ekai highlighted the importance of vocational training, citing global models where technical skills drive national development, and encouraged youth to embrace skills-based learning.

County Executive Faith Aletea stressed the need for continued partnerships to transform Kakuma into a vibrant municipality, while County Executive James Wangiros emphasized the institute’s role in fostering trade and innovation.

The delegation also toured other Kakuma Kalobeyei Challenge Fund (KKCF)-supported enterprises, including Sanivation Limited, Renewvia Energy, and Silo Agrovet, which are contributing to sustainable development and local economic growth.
