New Regional Director calls for better performance, decries low grades

All education stakeholders in Coast region have been urged by the newly appointed Regional Director of Education (RDE) to cooperate fully in order to improve both their academic standards and perform better in national examinations.

Speaking to Education News in his office in Mombasa town recently, Mr. Luka Chebet Kangogo, the RDE, decried the low number of students in public secondary schools in the region who scored grade A (plain) in 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)

He further observed that the prevailing situation has caused concerns; hence concerted efforts should be taken urgently by education stakeholders in the region with a view of addressing the issue.

“Other regions in the country produce many As in schools in national examinations, and through determination, hard work and cooperation between education stakeholders, teachers and parents and discipline among students, Coast region can achieve many As in national examinations,” added the Regional Director.

Mr. Kangogo however revealed that although public secondary schools in the region posted impressive performance in 2022 KCSE and that there is still more room for improvement on the same.

He called upon education stakeholders in the region to exercise team work in a bid to post sterling performance  in schools  in the region in 2023 KCSE.

“There is no short cut in passing national examinations, except working extra harder amongst  education stakeholders, teachers, students and parents,” he noted.

He also asked Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOS) operating in the region, well-wishers, charitable organisations and even individuals to come forward and support schools by ensuring that they provide the essential physical learning facilities to enhance effective teaching and learning respectively.

“You are therefore duty bound in ensuring that schools in the region post better performance in national examinations,” added Mr. Kangogo.

At the same time, he asked teachers in the region to be dedicated to their work so as to enable their schools produce better results in 2023 KCSE, emphasizing on the importance of offering quality education to students in schools.

The director urged secondary school principals from the region to ensure early Syllabus coverage so as to pave way for thorough revisions in all subjects.

Mr. Kangogo, however warned teachers against frequent absenteeism, adding that anybody found to be absent from his or her working station without express permission from the school administration will be dealt with accordingly.

He also directed Quality Assurance and Standards Officers in the region to always supervise and inspect schools for effective teaching and learning.

He further encouraged that the achievement of remarkable development in the region entirely depends on educated people who will be charged with the sole responsibility of implementing, planning and designing community development projects.
