New Kangundo KESSHA Chair vows to raise area academic levels

New KESSHA chairman of Kangundo has vowed to uplift the standards of education in the sub-county to acceptable levels after a long lull.

For almost a decade now, Kangundo Sub-county has been tailing in end of year national exams in Machakos County.

But now the new KESSHA (Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association) Chair Joseph Makau has unveiled an ambitious strategic plan meticulously crafted with an aim to change the trend and nurture every student’s potential to fruition.

Speaking to Education News in his office, Makau said it is a shame that the sub-county mean score has been revolving around three for years.

He pointed out that at the heart of this plan is a multi-faceted approach that encompasses excellence in curricular activities, infrastructure improvement and community engagement in the 31 secondary schools in the sub-county.

“We have began workshops, benchmarking tours and seminars for both the teachers and students to get motivation from schools that are doing well. We will also be doing evaluations after introducing a common exam that will be used to see whether the teachers have covered the syllabus. We have also set our target mean at 4.42. What I can say is that at the core of our strategic plan is commitment to excellence,” asserted Makau, his eyes reflecting both determination and optimism.

He said principals will also be visiting schools to talk to students and teachers, even as they prioritize professional development initiatives and mentorship programmes  to ensure a nurturing learning environment.

Makau revealed that the association will work closely with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to ensure the implementation of the plan.

“We hope the TSC will deploy more teachers to our secondary schools because the shortage is alarming. We are also working with the area MP to provide learning materials, offer bursary and sponsor capacity building functions,” he said.

“We are hoping the ministry will help us in instilling discipline in the students and also help while working with the parents,” he said.

He urged teaches to be professional, transparent and accountable in their line of work.
