New funding model to reduce varsity fees, Inyangala says

Higher Education PS, Dr Beatrice Inyangala

The Principal Secretary (PS) for Higher Education, Dr Beatrice Inyangala has termed the new university funding model as the best option for Kenyan parents.

The PS stated that the newly introduced model provides considerable financial relief for parents by reducing the amount they need to pay for their children’s university education.

Speaking at an event in Shinyalu, Kakamega County recently, she emphasized that the government will cover a significant portion of the tuition fees.

“Families will only support their children by paying fees ranging from 5per cent to 40 per cent of the cost of the programme. I can assure you that families will pay as low as Ksh3,000 school fees a semester for their children in University,” she said.

Inyangala refuted the widespread claims that the new model would make university education unaffordable and inaccessible for most families, stating that these claims were false.

“There is absolutely no reason why any child should not be able to access university education or participate in any programme because the government is standing with her people, to support them. The government is meeting them at their various levels of need,” remarked Dr Inyangala.

“There has been this debate about whether we have increased the cost of university programmes. I want to assure you that we have not increased the cost of programmes,” she reiterated.

The PS stated that the cost of university programs has been assessed, with the government pledging to cover up to 80 per cent of the expenses, while families, with assistance from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), will be responsible for the remaining 20 per cent.
