Learners at Kaptum Primary School in Emsoo Ward, Elgeyo Marakwet County can now study in a new modern Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) classroom, following the county government’s completion and handover of the facility to the school.
The new classroom replaces a dilapidated mud-walled structure that had served pupils for years, marking a major milestone in efforts to enhance early learning conditions in rural schools.
Headteacher Moses Rotich said the new facility has transformed the school’s learning environment and boosted morale among young learners.
“Our pupils have been using a structure that was in bad shape, built many years ago. This new classroom gives them a safer and more motivating environment to learn,” said Rotich.

He recounted the challenges pupils faced, especially during rainy seasons, when the leaking roof and muddy floor made lessons nearly impossible.
“During rains, it was a nightmare. The leaking roof and muddy floor made it difficult for any meaningful learning to take place. We are truly grateful,” he added, praising the county government for prioritizing the project.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly Education Committee Chair Christopher Cheboiboch confirmed that the new classroom met all required building and safety standards.
“This is a well-done project. It meets all expected standards, and we are happy with the outcome,” said Cheboiboch, who is also the MCA, Emsoo ward.

Parents from the community expressed joy and relief, saying the new classroom would safeguard their children’s health and enhance their enthusiasm for school.
“Our children’s safety and comfort matter most. This classroom will keep them from harsh weather and make learning enjoyable,” said one parent.
The construction of the ECDE classroom is part of the county government’s broader initiative to improve early learning infrastructure and guarantee quality education for all children.
