The management of NEP Girls National School in Garissa has temporarily suspended the boarding wing.
The resolution was reached after a dormitory in the school was allegedly set ablaze by rogue students on Sunday.
After a crisis meeting the school Board of Management temporarily suspended the boarding wing.
Unconfirmed reports say the unrest which led to a dormitory being set a blaze erupted after the girls were denied a half term recess by the non-local principal.
‘’ The school’s boarding wing will be closed since a majority of students live within Garissa town. They will attend classes during the day and go home for the remaining part,’’ read part of the recommendation.
The statement added, ‘’closing the school and resumption wasn’t possible within three weeks because the girls had just resumed classes after the recent half term break.’’
The BOM justified their decision arguing that this will release tension and unrest among the students to evade something serious happening at night.
They said 80% of the boarders can operate from home.
The board has also resolved that form one and two should close immediately while form three and four close on December 20th.
‘’The Ministry of Public Works has been assigned the task of assessing the damage. They’ll come up with the property damage cost,’’ read part of the statement which laid the cost of repair on parents.
Garissa Deputy County Commissioner Bernard ole Kipury who visited the school after the incident revealed that at least ten people including students, and non-teaching staff were under investigation about the incident.
‘’A multi-agency team has hit the ground running to help nab the culprits. We are hell-bent of ensuring the suspects behind the arson are apprehended,’’ said the DCC.
