Ndindi Nyoro accuses the government of quietly weakening Free Education

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has accused the government of “quietly weakening” Kenya’s free education programme, warning that recent policy and budget decisions point to a deliberate effort to weaken a system that has supported millions of learners for years.

While addressing more than 1,000 medical graduates in Thika, Nyoro claimed the changes signal a plan to “slowly but deliberately finish free education,” a move he said would hit the poorest households hardest.

Nyoro argued that reducing state support for primary and secondary schooling would reverse gains made since the introduction of free education, particularly for children who rely entirely on government-funded learning. He said the programme remains one of the country’s most important equalizers and cautioned that undermining it would widen inequality and stall human capital development.

His remarks come at a time when the government, through the Ministry of Education, has defended its education reforms as necessary for improving efficiency under the Competency-Based Curriculum. However, Nyoro’s comments are expected to intensify debate over the future of education funding and the sustainability of free schooling.

During the same event, JFC Munene College of Health Sciences Director Cecilia Ochol congratulated the graduating class and encouraged them to approach their careers with optimism. She urged the new professionals to become “solution givers” in their communities, saying their training had equipped them to overcome challenges and pursue their ambitions with confidence.
