A school in Yatta, Machakos County, is making headlines after saving millions of shillings by building its bakery to supply bread for students.
For years, Ndalani Secondary School used to spend over KSh800,000 every month just on bread. But after completing their bakery a few months ago, the school has now started reaping the benefits of that bold move.
According to the school principal, Jane Gateri, the bakery project has helped the school reduce rising food costs, even though the savings didn’t come instantly.

“With the limited capitation money, this is convenient for the school. Although the reprieve was not instant, at least now the cost is going down, and with time it will be better,” she said in an interview with Education News.
With over 800 students, the school had been feeling the pinch of high costs, especially with the increasing number of learners and rising food prices.
However, the savings from the bakery enable the school to redirect funds to other vital projects, including infrastructure and learning facility improvements.
Ndalani Secondary has also been recognised for its excellent infrastructure, and recently the school unveiled a state-of-the-art dormitory as part of an ongoing effort to improve school infrastructure.

Speaking during a recent tour of the school, Machakos County Secretary of Education Margaret Mwirigi commended the leadership of the school’s principal, Jane Gateri, for transforming the school through effective resource management.
“I commend Ndalani Secondary School for the excellent infrastructure they have developed. Other schools should visit here to learn something or two,” said Mwirigi.
The school has not only been investing in development but has also been performing well academically, recording a mean score of 6.94 in last year’s KCSE exams.
It has consistently been the top performer in the sub-county for decades.
