NCPWD offers academic scholarships to 27 disable children in Nakuru County

NCPWD offers academic scholarships to students in Nakuru County. The scholarships from the National Council for Persons with Disability (NCPWD) were given to 27 students.

Nakuru County Director of Disability Services Michael Kaburu revealed that the students have been admitted in 18 secondary schools within the county.

Kaburu said that the government through NCPD has already disbursed the first quarter amounting to Ksh.728,784 to the 18 secondary schools.

He said that those secondary schools include Nakuru Boys High School (two students), Jomo Kenyatta Boys High School (two students), Enaiposha Girls High School(two students), Langa Langa Secondary School (two students), Ngala Secondary School for the Deaf (Six students), Anestar Precious Girls High School (one students), Anestar Victory Boys High School (One students) and Upperhill Mixed Secondary School(one students).

He added that other schools including; Moi Forces Academy-Lanet (one student), Njoro Girls High School (one students), Nakuru Central Secondary School (one student), Bavuni Secondary School (one student), Elite High School -Karunga (one student) Heni Secondary School (one student), Kahuho Secondary School (one student), Nakuru Day Secondary School (one student) Rohi Boys High School (one student) and St.Maria Veronica Girls Secondary School (one students).

Kaburu urged all Secondary School heads to provide conducive environment in all education institutions to enable persons with disabilities to learn without any problem.

He said that when given good environment, persons with disability can get quality education and become important people in the society.

Kaburu gave the example of prominent lawyers and lectures who despite being disabled are making it in life and are currently having various position in state agencies and international organization.

“I urged all School heads to be ready to accommodate persons with disability in an inclusive manner that can make them view themselves as respected people by creating a conducive environment to enable them receive educations like other Kenyan children,” said Kaburu.

Kaburu who was speaking in his office in Nakuru County also urged all school heads to ensure classrooms, staffrooms, school laboratories, administration blocks and other facilities have been constructed in a manner that all person with disability can access them without a problem.

He also told school heads to be ready to work closely with NCPWD to solve any challenges that may face the persons with disability and that the council is ready to address them, asking them to contact them in case there was an issue.

Kaburu took the opportunity to thank all parents who educated their disabled children in primary schools.
