Narok teachers vow to stay put amid calls to end strike

Charles Ng'eno, KUPPET Secretary for Narok. He is spearheading teachers' activities in the county as the strike enters day two.

KUPPET has stressed that the teachers strike is still on amidst calls by senior government officials to go back to work.

The union’s Narok branch has made it clear that its members will not report back to school until their demands are honoured by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Led by their Secretary Charles Ng’eno, the teachers accused TSC of disregarding their 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

“The money was to reflect in the teachers’ pay slips from January this year, but nothing has reflected yet,” lamented Ng’eno.

They also want the intern Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to be confirmed, among other issues.

“The 46,000 intern teachers were promised to be confirmed on a permanent basis in July; but as we speak, the teachers are told to go back to school before they are confirmed,” he said.

The union also wants TSC to promote teachers who have stagnated in one job group for a long time, saying some had remained in the same position for over 10 years.

“We ask our members to boycott classes as the strike has officially begun. We assure them that the strike is protected and no one will threaten them,” he said.

Branch chairman Samson Soit said many teachers have been acting as Deputy Principals for a long time.

However, Basic Education Principal Secretary (PS) Dr Belio Kipsang, while on a tour around schools, dismissed the teachers’ threats as inconsequential as learning had resumed in most schools as expected.

Speaking at Masikonde Primary School when he inspected JSS classrooms, Kipsang’ said TSC has committed to honour the teachers’ demands by January, hence called on teachers to report back to school without failure.
