Narok school honours athletes who participated in Term One school games

A school in Narok County has honoured five athletes who participated in the primary school athletics championship last week.

Kwalela Primary school in Narok South sub-county decided to feted the students as a way of appreciating their talents and for being the institution ambassador in sports.

The students were paraded in the assembly in front of the teachers, parents, students and their efforts appreciated.

The five are Enock Kimutai(5,000m), Abigael Karie (2,000m), Diana Chepkoech (6km cross country), Dorcas Cherono (1,500m) and Sheila Chepkirui (800m).

All the students made it to the county championship but only Kimutai qualified for the Rift-Valley regional games in Maralal, Samburu County.

School head teacher Newton Koech said the move was meant to encourage the learners to work hard and achieve their goals.

“It is a motivation and shows everything is possible in whatever you do,” Newton said.

Koech, who is also KNUT Narok branch chairman, said the appreciation is part of the fundamental focus of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) which is aimed at discovering the students’ full potential while still studying in schools and by doing so it will shape their lives in future.

“The curriculum offers children a variety of learning possibilities which assist them identify their talents and potential opportunities they can explore based on their skills,” he said.

He said that not all the students are good in classes and they should be given a chance to explore their talents in sports.

“There is a need to blend academic and co-curricular activities because both go hand-in-hand because the sporting activities will go alongside enhancing students’ academic performances,” Newton said.

The head teacher said Narok has a potential of great talents as witnessed by sportsmen and sportswomen who have hoisted high Kenya’s flag on the international stage and hail from the vast county.

The unionist called on the Government and stakeholders to assist and help in identifying the talents so that the learners can pursue their dreams.

The county has produced a constellation of the memorable names in the world of athletes.

They include Billy Konchellah, younger brother of the late Patrick Konchellah in the 800M, 4x 400 relay Olympic Silver medalist at the 1968 Mexico City games Daniel Rudisha, his son David

Rudisha, the current World’s 800 M record holder, Charles Kokoyo, Stephen Marai and Dr Darius Taruru.

Others are former 800M World Youth champion Leonard Kirua ole Kosencha and 2011 World youth silver medalist Alphas are also from the region.
