Parents and guardians in Narok County have been urged to take a proactive role in monitoring and guiding their children as schools prepare to break for a two-month holiday.
John Saruni Melelek, a professional from Narok East sub county Sub-County, emphasized the importance of parental involvement during this period, noting that children are particularly vulnerable when schools are closed.
He noted that the long school vacation, while a time for rest and recreation, can also expose children to numerous risks if not carefully managed.
“This is a long holiday. We are asking parents to take control of their children’s lives. Ensure they know their schedules, where they go, and who they spend time with. We want these children back in school next year, safe and healthy,” Saruni said.
Saruni,Borough Manager at the Nairobi City County Government highlighted that children face a growing array of challenges during long breaks, including teenage pregnancies, early marriages, drug and substance abuse, and the influence of peer pressure.
These risks, he said, can have lasting consequences on their education, health, and overall development.
The seasoned politician and Narok Aspiring Senator 2027,called on the parents to actively engage with their children, fostering open communication to understand their daily lives and the challenges they encounter.

“Parents should not neglect their core responsibility of guiding their children. The influence of peers and other external factors can be dangerous. As parents, you must ensure your children are shielded from such negative influences and encouraged to make the right choices,” he stressed.
He also commended teachers for their dedication in instilling discipline, teaching good morals, and providing supportive learning environments during school terms.
However, he emphasized that lessons learned in school can only be reinforced through consistent parental guidance at home.
In addition, Saruni called on communities to play a supportive role in nurturing children, noting that raising responsible and safe children is a collective responsibility.
“Teachers and schools can guide and mentor, but the foundation of a child’s growth starts at home. Parents, guardians, and community leaders must work together to create a safe and conducive environment for our children,” he said.
Saruni’s message serves as a timely reminder that the well-being and development of children depend not only on schools but also on vigilant, caring families and communities working together to protect the next generation.
