Narok County Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have begun a three-day sensitization workshop aimed at strengthening the execution of the Anti-FGM Implementation Matrix and the Gender Policy Implementation Matrix.

The training, organized by the County Department of Gender in partnership with the Gender Technical Working Group (GTWG), seeks to enhance legislators’ understanding and capacity to support gender-responsive policies and eradicate harmful cultural practices.

The forum, which officially kicked off yesterday, was opened by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Gender, Robert Simotwo, who reaffirmed the county government’s unwavering commitment to ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and promoting gender equality.

“We are committed to ensuring that Narok becomes a model county in eradicating FGM and advancing gender inclusion. This training will help our MCAs understand their legislative and oversight roles in enforcing these policies,” said Simotwo.

He urged the leaders to use their platforms to sensitize communities and ensure that the gains made in gender empowerment are not reversed by outdated cultural beliefs.

The workshop has brought together key partners from both the county and national governments, as well as gender experts and civil society actors, in a bid to consolidate support for effective policy execution.

Among those present were Gender Chief Officer Pesi Ntari, Gender Committee Chairperson Jefferson Langat, Agnes Ngeno from the State Department of Gender, County Director of Gender Esther Malaso, and several consultants working with the county on gender mainstreaming.

The participants will, over the three days, deliberate on practical strategies for implementing gender policies, integrating gender perspectives in county legislation, and creating stronger community engagement mechanisms against FGM and other forms of gender-based violence.

The sensitization forum marks a significant step by the Narok County Government towards ensuring that all gender-related frameworks are fully operationalized, with the support of local leaders, to foster equality, protect human rights, and promote inclusive development across the county.
