Authorities in Narok County have intensified efforts to combat Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and teenage marriages, particularly during the school holiday period, when such cases tend to rise.

County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia has termed the practices as retrogressive, vowing stern action against individuals found to be promoting or aiding them.

“These harmful practices not only violate the rights of children but also hinder development in our communities,” said Lotiatia during a public address in Narok town.

He called on residents to embrace change and to report incidents of FGM and child marriage to the authorities.

“We cannot allow these outdated customs to continue destroying the future of our girls. Anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law,” he added.

Lotiatia also commended local stakeholders, including teachers and administrators, for their role in ensuring uninterrupted learning in the county.

“Learning activities have been running smoothly, and this has been made possible by the cooperation of all involved parties,” he noted.

Religious leaders in the region have also lent their support to the government’s campaign. The clergy warned against the continuation of harmful traditional practices and promised to spearhead awareness efforts within their congregations.

“As church leaders, we are committed to safeguarding the dignity and future of our children. We will continue to preach against these practices and educate our people,” said Rev. Joseph Nkurunka, a local church leader.

However, despite these efforts, FGM and teenage marriages remain deeply rooted in some communities within the county. Disturbingly, there have been reports of some local chiefs being complicit in perpetuating the harmful practices.

Human rights groups and local activists have urged the government to take decisive action against such officials and to strengthen community education programs aimed at eradicating the vice.
