Namawanga Girls High School in Bungoma County has set its sights on advancing beyond the regional level in hockey following its elimination at the Western Region championships.

Speaking exclusively to Education News, Chief Principal Jane Owuor affirmed the team’s commitment to rigorous training for next year’s school games.

She expressed optimism that the squad, regarded as one of Kenya’s rising hockey teams, will make a breakthrough on the national stage.

“We are determined to go beyond the Western Region next year. Our girls have shown immense potential, and with continued training and discipline, we are confident of achieving greater success,” Owuor said.

However, the principal decried the persistent challenge of player poaching by well-established schools, which she said has disrupted the team’s growth. She highlighted the financial strain of sustaining a competitive hockey team without sponsorship.

“We have lost some of our most talented players to more prominent schools, which affects team stability. Hockey is also an expensive sport in terms of equipment and logistics. Without external support, it remains a challenge,” she noted.

Head coach Titus Wafula echoed her sentiments, revealing that the team has resumed training despite their regional exit.

He praised the school administration for its unwavering support. He assured fans of an improved performance in next year’s Term One games.

“We are using this time to refine our tactics and address the weaknesses that cost us at the regional stage. The support from the administration has been invaluable, and we are working tirelessly to elevate our performance,” Wafula said.

With renewed focus and determination, Namawanga Girls remains poised to defy the odds and cement its place among Kenya’s elite hockey teams.
