Teachers in Nakuru County have urged the Teachers Service Commission, (TSC) to fully engage all Kenyan teachers in an open public consultation before making a shift from the current Minet medical cover to the proposed Social Health Authority (SHA).
Led by the KUPPET Nakuru Executive Secretary Duncan Macharia, the teachers said the medical cover is a critical service that directly their affairs and they must be involved before it’s in fully implemented.
Speaking to Education News yesterday, Macharia warned TSC against forcing teachers into the SHA, stating that it lacks constitutional backing as there was no public participation done to okay its implementation as a medical cover on educators.
“We want to tell TSC to stop any attempt to put Kenya teacher into SHA as their medical cover,all teachers must be thoroughly involved into public participation before TSC get them a new medical cover,” said Macharia.
He also said that teachers need a medical cover which is effective and can attend to their health smoothly and guarantee them quality health.
“Medical is a critical services that will affect the teaching profession. Therefore, teachers should be involved through public participation to know their new medical cover and allowed to air their views.” He said

The Unionist urged the TSC Acting CEO Evaleen Mitei to handle the teachers medical cover with seriousness that it deserve in order to guarantee teachers good health during their working duties.
“We want to urged TSC Acting CEO Evaleen Mitei to handle the teachers medical cover with seriousness that it deserve, teachers with good health will effectively teach Kenyan children in schools”, said Macharia.
Additional, Macharia urged Ministry of Education to pay all teachers who participated in National Games for Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) and Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) which was held in August This year in Kakamega County.
The Unionist said teachers who participate during the KSSSA and FEASSSA have not received their money, saying it is so unfair that those teachers are still in distress.
“It is unfortunate for MoE officials to forcefully withheld the money of Kenyan teachers who participate in KSSSA and FEASSA games. They made us proud by enabling our students to shine in Kenya and East Africa in sports, hence deserve respect and that respect is to pay them their money,” said Macharia.
He added that teachers are key backbone on nurturing the talents of all learners and the Ministry should pay them in time.

Macharia also urged ministry to release an official circular that illustrate the amount of money which should be paid to all teachers who participate during co-curricular activities like KSSSA,Kenya Music and Drama Festival and Science and Engineer Fair.
“Kenyan teachers are civil servant of this country and they should be paid their money PER DIEM in accordance to an official circular from the Ministry of Education signed by Education Cabinet Secretary or Education Principal Secretary”, said Nakuru KUPPET Executive Secretary.
He reveal that for many years, teachers have been used by the ministry officials by allowing them to work without being paid per diem as he add that the time has come for teachers to be treated like other civil servant who are being paid the money per diem.
The Unionist also requested the ministry to released 2026 Schools Co-Curricular Calender which separate the Co-Curricular Activities of Primary Schools and Junior Secondary Schools.
“We Request the Ministry of Education to release the Calendar of School Co-Curricurar activities which separate the date and venue of Primary School and Junior Secondary School,” said Macharia
