Nakuru, Kisii teachers unite to give a befitting send-off to a colleague who passed away after a short illness

The late Douglas Mogoi,

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has urged teachers to remain united and work as a team to protect their economic and professional rights.

They instructed their members not to be divided along political or regional lines by politicians known for their divisive tactics.

Speaking at Eberege Primary School in Bomachoge Constituency, Nakuru County, KUPPET Executive Secretary Duncan Macharia stated that teachers in both his union and those from KNUT share the same goals, as both unions serve to advocate for their welfare. He cautioned them against anyone who might exploit them for personal gain.

Mr Macharia and his team accompanied the staff and a few students from St. John’s Bahati Secondary School to condole with the family of Douglas Mogoi, who, until his death, was a teacher at Bahati Secondary School in Nakuru.

The Principal of the school, who led his staff in mourning their colleague, described the deceased as a man who taught with passion and love to his students and asked teachers to follow his example.

Gucha Branch KNUT Executive Secretary, Lucy Machuki, who was present, lauded her colleagues from Nakuru for their solidarity in championing the welfare of teachers.

She cautioned the government against scrapping their hardship allowances because it will lead to an imbalance in teachers’ postings, and this will adversely affect the education standard.

“Instead of scraping the allowances, let the government increase them to motivate teachers,” she said.

Mwalimu Sacco director Dr Sarah Nyaenya asked teachers to join Saccos to stabilise their financial strength, which cushions them from economic constraints, which lead to stress-related maladies.

“Saccos will help you to get soft loans that will help you to build good homes to give you and your families good shelter for mental and physical comfort,” she said.

The send-off ceremony was also attended by Garissa Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Kennedy Omari, who asked parents and teachers to guard and guide the youth against alcohol, drug abuse and night discos because they lure them into committing evils.

“Satan works in darkness, please do allow these young people to indulge in the night discos,” he said.

The administrator thanked the government for initiating free Information and Communication Technology (ICT) short courses at the Mokubo location and urged the youth to seize the opportunity to train for self-sustainability instead of engaging in unethical social media forums.
