Nakuru County teacher shortage stands at over 3,000

By Peter Otuoro

Nakuru County TSC Director Japheph Kariuki has said the county has a shortage of 3,427 teachers in both primary and secondary schools, with a deficit of 2,157 and 1,270 respectively.

Speaking to Education News in his office in Nakuru City, Kariuki said the county received only 278 secondary and 290 primary school postings in the just concluded teacher recruitment.

He urged schools to fill the gaps by engaging teachers under Board of Management (BoM) terms as they await the next recruitment.

With virtual learning taking root, he suggested to schools to be creative and deliver lessons simultaneously to many classes through online arrangements.

“Virtual learning should be embraced in our schools where one teacher is able to teach five streams of form one or form two at the same time,” said Kariuki, adding it could even work across multiple schools.

He gave an example of Natewa Secondary and Molo Academy which have successfully launched such a programme.
