Nairobi Region schools battle for glory as ball games kick off in Mathare

Fireworks are expected as this year’s Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Nairobi Region Term Two games that kicked off today morning at various grounds within Mathare Sub-county.

They will be battling for bragging rights as well as tickets to this year’s KSSSA National Term Two games set for July 28 to August 7 in Kisii. Football, volleyball, rugby 7s, basketball 3X3, tennis badminton and table tennis titles are up for grabs for both boys and girls and netball.

Dagoretti High and Dagoretti Mixed are among last year’s champions that will be looking to retain their titles as well as book their places at the Kisii showpiece. The two will be out to defend their boys and girls football titles. Dagoretti High who finished second at last year’s national games will kickstart their campaign in Pool A against Loresho Secondary at St Teresa’s Girls before locking horns with Langata High at the same venue.

Dagoretti coach Joseph Makokha said that his main objective is to retain the regional title and return to the nationals where he hopes to improve on last year’s second place finish.

“We have been at the nationals three times and our best performance has been second place in both 2019 and 2023. If we retain our title and return to the nationals, we can enhance our performance due to consistency,” Makokha said.

A stiff battle is expected in Pool C which has 2022 East Africa silver medalists Highway Secondary who play Brownhill and Jehovah Jire in their first and second match at Moi Forces Academy. Under the tutelage of Harambee Starlets and Kenya Police Bullets coach Beldine Odemba Highway to return to the national games having missed last year’s extravaganza.

Former champions Upper Hill are in Pool G where they play Dandora Secondary and Lenana School in hunt for a place in the round of 16. Jamhuri High will entertain Kenya Muslim and Hospital Hill in Pool E while in Pool B St Patricks, Nairobi School and Our Lady of Fatima (OLF) hunt for tickets to the round of 16.

Moi Forces will host Olympic High School and Shammah in Pool D, Pumwani Boys will bank on home advantage when they take on Riwa High School and Beth Mugo High. Githurai Secondary, Genesis Joy and Waylight Secondary complete the boys line up in Pool H.

Girls’ football defending champions Dagoretti Mixed tackle Embakasi Girls and Pangani Girls in Pool A. Former National champions Maina Wanjigi will take on Starehe Girls and Beth Mugo in Pool E, Dagorreti Mixed dethroned former national champions Olympic High in 2019 and have dominated the region since then.

In basketball 3X3, Dagoretti High and Olympic High will be looking to defend their boys’ and girls’ titles respectively. Dagoretti are in Pool A together with Aquinas, Nairobi School, Mathari Mixed, Muhuru Muchiri and Kibera Secondary.

Olympic begin their quest in Group A which also has St Georges, Peter Kibukosya, Maina Wanjigi, Clay City and St Claire Nembu. Rugby 7s will be played from Friday, Upper Hill are the defending champions whereas the girls contest will be a new entrant to KSSSA events.

In volleyball, regional champions Ruthimitu Mixed and Soweto Academy will be out to extend their dominance. National boys’ champions Ruthimitu Mixed will be out to bag a third title in a row and also increase their chances of defending their national crown.

Ruthimitu will serve off their title quest in Pool A against Woodly before taking on Aquinas High in their second tie. Former national champions Hospital Hill who are yearning to return to the nationals having featured last in 2017 are in Pool B alongside Mihango Secondary and Githurai Secondary. Langata High who won the 2018 and 2019 regional titles are also looking to salvage their pride. They are in Pool C together with Shadrack Kimalel Secondary and Moi Forces.
