School principals laud proposed KCSE grading system

St. Emmanuel Mwiruri High School Principal Moses Cheluchi

St. Emmanuel Mwiruri High School Principal Moses Cheluchi has hailed the new grading structure of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations as proposed by the Ministry of Education on September 25, 2023.

Speaking while addressing the press at Kibabii University where he took his students for an exposure trip on Friday, Cheluchi, said that the move will ensure more students join the University.

“This is something we have been yearning for. This new system will ensure that more students join higher institutions of learning,” he said.

Cheluchi called on education stakeholders to support the new system adding that students have been working hard to attain the elusive Grade A but many fail due to being burdened by many subjects.

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu said that only two mandatory subjects – Mathematics and one Language – will be required in computing the Mean Grade.

Previously, there were five mandatory subjects across three cluster groups; Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, two Sciences and one Humanity.

However, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula on September 27 stopped the implementation of the recommendations contained in the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) Report.

This is after Emuhaya Member of Parliament (MP) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) National Chairman Omboko Milemba rose on a Point of Order to seek the Speaker’s direction regarding the PWPER recommendations, stating that the task force, led by Prof. Raphael Munavu, made several recommendations to reform the education sector consequently establishing great conflict not only within the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) but also to other players in the sector.
