Mwihila Girls senior school in Khwisero, Kakamega County has embarked on admitting Grade 10 students without uniforms to boost enrollment.

Speaking at the school, Principal Rosemary Mwandihi said they are experiencing a very low turnout, stating that the institution has so far admitted 15 students only.

“We anticipated at least 50 students to fill a class but up to now we have only 15. From the reports I am receiving, there are some students who are still at home.” She said, adding that majority stay with guardians and grandparents who are not sure on what to do with the kids.

Mwandihi said it’s unfortunate that some parents are ignorant especially on the continuity of education under the new system.

“They don’t understand the new education system and therefore they are confused.” She reiterated

The principal further revealed that the school is facing naming antagonism, saying that the community wanted the name of the school changed from Mwihila Girls to Emulole Mixed Senior Day School.

“They said the name Mwihila does not belong to them and it should be changed to Emulole so that they can own the school and allow their children to come and learn.” She said.

She further stated that the Ministry of Education carried out public participation recently on the name changing issue to allow the community to support the school and uplift enrolment.

The principal urged the community to bring in their children, saying they are free to come as its still early for the Grade 10 admissions.

She expressed gratitude to area MP Christopher Aseka for coming in handy, saying that were it not for him the school could have been closed.
