In a move aimed at cutting electricity costs and promoting clean energy in public schools, Mvita Member of Parliament, MP Mohamed Machele has announced a plan to install solar panels in all 30 primary schools across the constituency.
The project, being implemented through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) in partnership with the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), is expected to provide reliable and sustainable power to learning institutions that have long grappled with erratic supply and high utility bills.
Speaking during a consultative meeting with head teachers from public schools in Mvita, Machele said the initiative would not only ease financial pressure on schools but also improve learning conditions.
“Providing quality education to residents of Mvita is central to my development agenda,” he said.
He added; “Many schools struggle with electricity bills and unreliable power. Partnering with REREC to install solar panels will make a big difference.”

The MP further revealed that he is also exploring partnerships with organisations such as Food4Education to provide school meals as part of efforts to promote learner retention.
“We will offer free food in schools because nutrition is key to effective learning,” he added.
Machele noted that the transition from the 8-4-4 education system to the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework had created disparities in infrastructure, with some schools experiencing congestion while others had underused classrooms.
“We have 30 primary and 13 secondary schools. Some have only three or four pupils per class, while others are overcrowded. We must strike a balance and equip our schools with laboratories for science, agriculture, and home science,” he said.
He also raised concern over the mushrooming of unregulated private schools, particularly in Old Town, which he said had contributed to declining enrolment in public schools such as Serani Primary.
Machele pledged continued collaboration with the Ministries of Education and Sports to strengthen Mvita’s education sector and announced plans to distribute laptops to all 30 primary schools to enhance efficiency in school administration.
