Murang’a VTCs face severe instructor, resource shortages

Murang'A Governor Irungu Kang'Ata Addressing A Nursery School Project Meeting

An acute shortage of instructors and teaching resources has affected vocational training centers (VTCs) in Murang’a County.

Governor Irungu Kang’ata, in his State of the County address, acknowledged the understaffing and inadequate equipment in vocational training centers.

He assured that the County Public Service Board is actively recruiting to address these issues.

MCA Chefman Njoroge from Kahumbu emphasized the dire situation in vocational centers, stressing the need for increased county investment and additional equipment to facilitate effective training.

He highlighted the crucial role of vocational training in preventing youth engagement in harmful behaviors such as alcoholism.

Njoroge appealed to the executive to prioritize the vocational training sector similarly to the Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) department. He stressed the importance of providing resources and support to help youth acquire skills and experience through mentorship.

The deficiency, observed across 67 facilities in nine sub-counties, has led to numerous learners discontinuing their studies.

To address the shortage, the county government has advertised tutoring positions in preparation for the resumption of learning next year, aiming to attract more students.

In August, the county government terminated the services of 274 trainers, resulting in a skeletal staff remaining.

Githia Ini Centre, with 33 students, lacks tutors.

Kaguku reports 45 learners without registered tutors, while Kamahuha has 101 students under four staff members.

Kahumbu Centre, with 33 students, has only one tutor, and Kangari Centre, with 72 learners, employs two tutors.

Ngunyu Chege accommodates 207 learners with just one trainer, and Mukangu Centre has 36 students under one trainer.

In Kahumbu ward, there are plans to convert vocational training centers into agribusiness facilities, aiming to support and bolster the agriculture sector.
