Murang’a county government is working on strategies to upscale its school feeding programme to accommodate 200,000 learners in the area.
Governor Irungu Kang’ata made the remarks during a meeting with the Food for Education board led by their Executive Director Wawira Njiru where they acknowledged the positive impact the programme had made on learners in primary schools enrolled in the programme.
Kang’ata said they discussed on how to expand the programme to reach 200,000 primary school pupils.
“In the programme, local farmers will have a ready market for their produce. There will be a need for 1,500 new jobs and good nutrition for the kids,” he said.

Wawira said that through the partnership with the county government, they will provide porridge for 42,000 ECDE learners daily.
“We want to ensure that all learners have the right meals to support their growth,” she said.
Susan Kamau, a mother of three, said that thanks to the programme, a meal costs Ksh20, relieving parents of the time taken to deliver food to their children during lunch hour.
“The programme is a Godsend as the children take a balanced meal while parents remain continue their businesses,” she said.
