Murang’a County Police have launched an extensive road safety sensitization campaign targeting primary school pupils as part of efforts to curb the increasing number of road accidents involving children.
The campaign, spearheaded by County Police Commander Kemboi Kimaiyo, aims to equip learners with practical knowledge on how to stay safe while using public roads and to promote responsible conduct among motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
During the campaign’s inaugural session at Technology Primary School in Murang’a Town, officers engaged pupils through interactive demonstrations and talks on various aspects of road safety, including the use of designated pedestrian crossings, road signs, safe walking habits, and awareness of traffic flow.
Kimaiyo noted that young learners are among the most vulnerable road users, particularly during peak school hours.
He said the campaign seeks to build lifelong awareness and prevent tragedies caused by recklessness or ignorance.
“We want our children to understand basic safety rules early enough so they can protect themselves on the road. At the same time, we are reminding drivers to slow down and remain alert whenever they approach schools or residential areas,” said Kimaiyo.

The County Police boss further warned motorists against speeding, careless overtaking, and parking on pedestrian walkways, noting that such behaviours often contribute to fatal accidents.
He added that the sensitisation drive will be rolled out to other schools across the county in partnership with teachers, parents, and local administrators to ensure broader community involvement.
Kimaiyo expressed confidence that the initiative will help cultivate a culture of caution and responsibility on the roads while encouraging collaboration between law enforcement and the public.
The campaign forms part of a nationwide effort by the National Police Service to promote road discipline and protect vulnerable groups, especially school-going children.
