The long serving Murang’a North KNUT branch Executive Secretary, Rosaline Njoki Kamina has been elevated to a senior administration officer at the union’s head office.

Kamina has now taken up the full time job and vacated the periodically elective seat in the branch.

Speaking during a special general meeting to bid goodbye to the teachers, she thanked them for electing her to the position for several terms. She noted the opportunity has enabled her to serve teachers and the education sector to the benefit of children.

She was the first woman to be elected to hold this powerful seat in the county triumphing over male contestants in the polls.

Kamina observed that the support of the members has opened doors for her.

Despite many challenges, she said teachers allowed her to do the best she could to champion their rights and the union’s agenda.

She promised  she  will  serve  the country’s  teachers  with dedication  in her  new office  to promote their welfare.

Kamina urged them to reject the new Kenya Women Teachers’Association outfit, saying it is created to weaken and break up KNUT.

Meanwhile, Julius Kamau Githaiga replaced Kamina after emerging the winner in a by-election.

Godfrey Maina Chege was also voted to the position of branch vice man. Chege, a teacher at Mioro Mixed Day Secondary school beat rivals to clinch the seat.

The union’s national assistant treasurer, Abdi Hussein Ali, who presided over the event, told members to remain firmly united to face emerging challenges.

He urged TSC to promote teachers as per the recent court ruling.

Ali reiterated that the union is opposed to the rushed rollout of the new competency based curriculum, saying it has many weaknesses.

The unionist observed among the weak points is quality of learning content, lack of enabling infrastructures, trained teachers, adequate financial resources and involvement of relevant stakeholders in the sector.

Ali argued the government should first prepare the ground by providing requisite facilities to schools, train teachers effectively and draft relevant curriculum with quality and content to benefit the learners.

Ali claimed some powerful foreign business forces, eyeing to invest in private education sector are forcing the government to implement CBC system so that they could gain.
