Junior secondary school (JSS) teachers in Murang’a County have protested against the government’s decision to reduce school capitation, saying it will compromise standards of education.

Led by their chairman Polycap Muriithi, the teachers urged Education CS Julius Ogamba to ensure more funds are allocated to education programmes, observing that slashing capitation per student from Ksh22,244 annually to Ksh15,042 is a mockery to the education sector.

“The decision to slash the capitation is unpopular among Kenyans,” said Muriithi during a Murang’a branch meeting in a Maragua hotel.
They added that many schools are cash starved and will be struggle to procure learning materials for science practicals in national examinations.

At the same time, the teachers urged, with the government to upgrade interns teachers to permanent terms. They said the government’s promise that the teachers will be absorbed by the TSC after serving for six months is yet to be honoured.

Gasper Ochieng said teachers serving on contract terms were suffering. “The monthly salary of Ksh17,000 is not enough, as the teachers have families to support. The promise made by the government should be honoured, said Ochieng.
