Mukumu Girls reopens in phases amid strict health regulations

The Form Four students of Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega County started reporting back into the institution today amid strict health regulations.

Over 200 candidates had returned to the school by this afternoon with the government and administration expressing confidence that all the over 400 learners would be back by evening.

The learners, accompanied by their parents and guardians, started streaming in at 8.00 AM where they were examined by medical personnel and taken for guidance and counselling conducted by eighty counselors.

A team of government officers led by the Western Regional Education Director Jared Obiero were present to receive the students and ensure that all laid-down rules and regulations were strictly adhered to.

The officials, including health experts, assured the girls and their parents of safety of food and water.

Obiero noted that one of the health measures put in place was ensuring that the school relies only on one source of water supplied by Lake Victoria South Water Services Board.

“Health experts are still testing the water from boreholes and will give their final verdict and recommendations before we can allow the school community to use it,” he said.

He assured that all the food that was in the school had been removed and destroyed and that health experts were also testing the foodstuff that was being brought in.

Obiero added that cooks had undergone fresh medical examinations and trained on how to maintain high levels of hygiene standards while preparing and serving food.

“I urge the parents to let their daughters return to school and assure them that we have put in place all the safety mechanisms. They already lost two active weeks of studies and should, thus, return to class to fill the gap,” he said.

The school Principal Jane Mmbone said they expected Form Three students tomorrow, Tuesday, Form Twos on Wednesday and Form Ones on Friday. She said the school would hold prayers on Wednesday.

Mukumu Girls was shut down last month following an outbreak of a strange disease that claimed the lives of three students and a teacher. Hundreds of others were hospitalized.
