Mukumu Girls High School has been closed indefinitely after two students were reported dead with cases relating to severe diarrhea after suspected food and water poisoning at the institution. Over 100 of them were admitted in Kakamega County General Hospital and St. Elizabeth Mukumu Mission Hospital where 25 learners are recuperating at the moment.

The number of students admitted in hospital so far has doubled to 246 with a number of students reporting fatigue and shortness of breath.

Just last week, the astonishing events from Kakamega based institution made the headlines in social media with many education stakeholders fearing of a possible outbreak of cholera which the public Health Officers and Medics from Kakamega County General Hospital ruled out.

At the same time, the county health chief officer David Alila promised that the hospital will issue a comprehensive report after completing the tests which were sent to KEMRI for analysis to ascertain the sudden surge in diarrhoea which has so far caused two students to succumb.

In April 2, 2023 a notice from the school principal, Fridah Ndolo addressing the parents, said the students who died were from Form One W and Form Two C.

On the other hand, notable leaders like Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda during their visit to the institution today (Monday, April 3, 2023), called on complete overhaul of the institution’s management.
