Mt. Kenya teachers want Speaker Muturi to vie for presidency

By Malachi Motano

Teachers from Mt. Kenya East region are urging the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi to go for the presidency, pledging their support.

The teachers, led by their Executive Secretary in Eastern Region Caxton Miungi said the time is now for the region to present their own candidate for presidency position.

According to the teachers who were represented by their union officials, they are tired of helping others field candidates for top leadership, adding that the region is equal to the task.

“Muturi is capable of leading the nation as he has been able to lead the parliament for the last eight years without any problem. Once the term for President Uhuru Kenyatta is over, he should handle over the baton to the Speaker,” Miungi said.

Muturi said he is equal to the task if they give him support owing to the fact that he has been handling huge controversial issues in parliament amicably.

He said Mt. Kenya East is now ripe for top leadership, adding that initially the region seemed not to have a candidate but currently they have one.

Muturi said there is no magic in the top leadership and the region is equal to the task. He therefore called for the teachers’ support for they are in direct contact with residents at grassroots level, adding that teachers’ fraternity are the largest group to reach residents.

The speaker also urged the teachers not to fear because of what they are hearing from those opposing him.

The meeting had brought KNUT and KUPPET officials from Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi counties.
