MPs petition TSC to appoint local principal at Kenyatta High in Taita Taveta

Taita Taveta MPs Danson Mwashako, Peter Shake, and Khamis Chome stamped a joint letter to TSC protesting exclusion of locals in principal appointments.

Three Members of Parliament from Taita Taveta County have petitioned the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to urgently address what they describe as the “systematic exclusion” of local principals from leading national schools within the county.

In a strongly worded letter dated August 12, 2025, and addressed to the TSC Chief Executive Officer, the MPs decried the appointment of principals from outside the county, leaving all three national schools in Taita Taveta under non-local leadership.

“It has come to public attention that recent transfers and appointments have largely excluded principals from Taita Taveta County,” the letter reads in part.

“Notably, none of the three national schools in the County currently has a principal who is a local.”

The MPs, led by Hon. Danson Mwashako Mwakuwona (Wundanyi Constituency), raised concern that earlier assurances from education officials that the imbalance would be corrected have not been honoured.

“We have previously raised this concern with the County Director and the Regional Director of Education, who assured us that the imbalance would be addressed,” the lawmakers wrote.

They argued that the appointment of a non-local to head Kenyatta High School, Mwatate, disregarded the qualifications and competence of local principals. “It is disheartening that the first vacancy to arise since those discussions now appears set to be filled by a principal from outside the County, despite the fact that there are qualified, competent, and experienced principals within Taita Taveta,” the letter continued.

Among those recommended was Mr. Severin Tole, described by the MPs as capable of discharging responsibilities at the prestigious Kenyatta High School. “For Kenyatta High School, we had recommended Mr. Severin Tole to take up that role,” they stated.

The letter was signed by Hon. Danson Mwashako (Wundanyi MP), Hon. Peter Shake (Mwatate MP), and Hon. Khamis Chome (Voi MP), each affixing their official parliamentary seals to underscore the seriousness of their concerns.

The MPs further urged TSC to apply fairness and inclusivity in future appointments, particularly where retirements or transfers create new vacancies. “We further request that upcoming changes occasioned by retirements/transfers be addressed with the same corrective approach,” they concluded.
