Narok Women Representative Rebecca Tonkei has backed demands by intern teachers for the government to absorb them on permanent and pensionable terms.

Tonkei said the teachers grapple with many hardships and it is high time the State converted them to permanent employees.

According to her, the teachers get low pay, and their conversion to permanent terms will see them get a salary rise hence meeting their basic needs.

“There is nothing wrong for our teachers to be in an internship programme like other interns in public service,” said Tonkei.

Tonkei however defended the move to have the teachers serve on internship, saying other public sectors have similar internship programmes.

Her Marakwet West counterpart MP Toroitich Kipchumba faulted individuals who moved to Court to block the employment of intern teachers which the Court upheld.

He said his committee advised the TSC to appeal the decision so that the JSS teachers can be employed permanently.

Toroitich, also a member of the Education Committee, further wants the Education Ministry allocated more funds in the 2024-2025 Financial Year, to allow for the confirmation of intern teachers and also to facilitate employment of more teachers.

“The court has pronounced itself on the matter. We as the Education Committee, we cannot agree with that decision, but we respect the court decision” added Toroitich.
