MPs benchmark in Kiharu on how to run schools using NG-CDF

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro engages with fellow legislators who visited his constituency to benchmark on how to apply some project models that have been successful under his watch.

More than 50 MPs have visited Kiharu Constituency to benchmark on how to effectively run schools using NG-CDF funds in the past six months.

Their aim is gain insights into proper utilization of the labour contracting model that has been used to improve learning institutions in the constituency.

Under the patronage of area MP Ndindi Nyoro, Kiharu has been hosting NG-CDF committees from various counties coming to learn more about the model, which is less expensive as the community owns the projects.

Most recently, 12 MPs from Northern Kenya, Eastern, Central and Rift Valley pitched camp at Nyakihai Primary School in Gaturi Ward – one of the 10 institutions where NG-CDF is piloting the programme on landscaping.

Legislators listen to a primary school teacher on how they have implemented some of the projects.

Nyoro told the MPs,  among them Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika), Edward Muriu (Gatanga) and Yakub  Dubow (Bura), that the labour contracting model has been used in Kiharu in tiling and renovating all the 112 primary schools.

The MPs were also taken through the Kiharu Masomo Bora programme where students in day secondary schools pay Ksh1,000 per term for food, and the NG-CDF takes care of the rest.

“I will embark on data collection as schools reopen to ensure we roll out the Masomo programme in Bura,” said Dubow.

Ng’ang’a on her part said she will also copy the programme to enroll all day schools into the programme to improve education standards.

“Thika Constituency is one of the areas with high enrollments in day schools and would be wise to initiate a similar programme to benefit more learners,” said Ng’ang’a.

Kipuiriri MP Wanjiku Muhia said she has already rolled out tiling programmes in primary schools in her constituency using the same model and is eager to know more about the Mosomo Bora concept.

“I have been to Kiharu severally accompanied by the NG-CDF committee for the purpose of learning how to improve the living standards of the electorate,” she added.
