MP wants budgetary allocation to education raised to Ksh1 trillion

Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi. He wants the education sector allocated 1 trillion shillings in the national budget.

Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi now wants the government to raise the budgetary allocation for education to 1 trillion shillings.

He regretted that education functions in the country are not properly funded since the capitation is not sufficient and does not take into account the enrollment in schools owing to the ever increasing number of learners.

“Even with 670 billion allocated for the education sector in the national budget, a larger amount of that money goes to salaries; that’s why I insist that if we allocate 1 trillion shillings out of the 4 trillion budget, then the county will gain much more since education is a key pillar in the development of any country,” Atandi said.

The legislator was speaking during the 20th edition of the Nyanza region KEPSHA conference in Siaya town where he urged parliamentarians to consider enhancing financial support to the education sector.

For the domiciling of the JSS in primary schools, the MP assured of Parliament’s support since it goes a long way in easing parents’ burden, noting that most schools could be in need of more classrooms, workshops and other facilities in line with the CBC curriculum.

“As MPs we recognize the need for improvement of infrastructure in our schools for JSS and we made it a policy in Parliament that half of the infrastructural budget for each constituency must go to JSS; meaning a lot of development will begin to happen this financial year,” he said.

Atandi, who is also a member of the Budget and Appropriation Committee, also decried too much taxation by the government, saying it is greatly affecting the education sector, especially with the meagre remuneration and resources channelled to the sector.

The MP, a renowned economist, said the performance of the Kenyan economy is poor, observing that its retardation is largely due to household consumption.
