Igembe South MP Johnpaul Mwirigi has encouraged young people across the constituency to seize opportunities offered by Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, saying that practical skills are becoming increasingly valuable as traditional office jobs continue to diminish.
Speaking during a fundraising event at St. Joseph Methodist Church in Maua, Mwirigi emphasised that TVET centres equip youth with market-ready skills that empower them to secure employment or venture into self-employment.
He noted that courses such as plumbing, electrical installation, hairdressing and beauty therapy, welding, carpentry, tailoring, and fashion design are attracting high demand both locally and internationally.
“Skill-based training is the surest path for our young people to gain economic independence. With the right hands-on abilities, they can create their own opportunities and contribute meaningfully to the growth of our community,” he said.

The MP also highlighted key development projects underway in Igembe South, including the ongoing subdivision of the constituency into two Sub-counties, the construction of a modern market in Maua town, the operationalisation of a Huduma Centre, and the recent launch of Kindaani Technical Training Institute.
He said the government is working to increase the number of training institutions to broaden opportunities for youth across the region.
Mwirigi urged leaders to focus on development-oriented initiatives that uplift residents’ livelihoods rather than engage in divisive political confrontation.
Meru Deputy Governor Linda Kihome also graced the event, alongside several other regional leaders, who echoed the call for youth empowerment through skills training and constructive engagement.
