An initiative aimed at transforming schools into child-friendly learning environments is being implemented in Kiharu constituency, Murang’a.

The initiative is targeting to improve the quality of delivery of teaching programs.

The strategy, dubbed –”Kiharu Masomo Bora initiative”, plans to enable children from financially challenged households to access education without any difficulties.

The move is led by Kiharu Member of Parliament Samson Ndindi Nyoro who explained that his constituency’s national government development fund (NG-CDF)  has taken over the burden of paying all fees required for learners enrolled at local day mixed secondary schools.

He said with support from stakeholders, his CDF kitty has mobilized financial resources to meet the cost of tuition charges for learners in day schools to access learning without disruption over money.

Parents are left to pay a paltry ksh 1,000 to support services in the schools per term.

Speaking at Weithaga boys high school, the legislator expounded that the strategy also includes the improvement of physical infrastructures which include renovation of classrooms, expansion, building of laboratories, libraries, toilets, and administration blocks, and buying buses among other requirements.

He added that schools are further supported with revision, teaching, and learning materials to address the improvement of academic performance.

Nyoro who is the chairman of the powerful budget committee in parliament revealed that so far a number of primary and secondary schools have benefited from this initiative.

“This is changing the attitudes of learners and teachers as they appreciate the upgraded environments of their learning institutions.

The MP observed that the move is aimed at offloading the financial burden from the parents in the wake of the prevailing escalating cost of living in the country, currently.” He said

The constituency has some 62 day mixed secondary schools, where the majority of local students are enrolled.

The legislator added that providing these institutions with requisite facilities would benefit most of the children from the region to get quality education at nearby schools.

The MP held that the objective is to boost the quality of facilities in preparation for the full implementation of the CBC curriculum at the secondary level.

Nyoro pointed local children are offered an opportunity to acquire full basic education without challenges from financial constraints in their households.
