MP resumes construction of public school shut years back for expansion

Shinyalu MP Fred Ikana is leading the construction of Khayega Primary that was shut for expansion years back.

Construction of the Khayega DEB Primary School in Shinyalu Constituency, Kakamega County, which had stalled for years, has been restarted.

This follows intervention of area MP Fred Ikana who announced that the exercise will be completed this year.

Ikana said that the contractor was back on the site to continue with construction of the school located at Khayega market along the Kakamega-Kisumu highway.

“We have committed to complete the project this year and ensure normalcy returns. It has been a tough period for the pupils, their teachers and parents,” Ikana said when he toured the institution to inspect the progress.

He said he had sourced for an initial sum of Ksh10 million, and that more funds would be pumped into it in due course.

The school had been closed some years back to pave way for construction of a new one with storey buildings due to inadequate land for expansion.

The learners were then transferred elsewhere amid hue and cry from the parents and other stakeholders.

The situation became even dire after a firm contracted to undertake the construction abandoned the project, citing pending bills.

But Ikana said this afternoon that he will ensure that the project is completed under his watch.

“My style of leadership is not about lamenting or passing blame but focussing on what transforms lives of our people. Khayega Primary is one such vital project that I will ensure is completed,” he added.

Khayega is among over twenty other schools undergoing complete facelifts in Shinyalu, all initiated in the past year.
