Baringo North Member of Parliament Joseph Maklab has called for a collective approach to improve the state of education in the region.
Maklap emphasised that better learning opportunities could play a key role in curbing banditry and promoting peace among youth.
Speaking during a public forum in Kabarnet town, Maklab noted that the area has suffered long-standing neglect in education development, and urged both government and private stakeholders to act.
“Education is the only way to enlighten our people and steer our young generation away from criminal activities like banditry,” he said. “We must come together – as leaders, parents, and communities – to make education accessible and effective.”
The legislator proposed the construction of more schools and learning institutions to address the current shortage, which he said has left many children without proper access to education.

He also raised concerns over school heads who send students home over unpaid fees, warning that such actions disrupt learning and discourage learners.
“Let us not punish students for challenges beyond their control. School administrators should consult with parents and relevant authorities to find amicable ways of addressing fee issues,” Maklab advised.
He pledged to make education a top priority in his development agenda, acknowledging that many families in Baringo North still struggle with the cost of education.
On the Competency-Based Education (CBE), Maklab urged the Ministry of Education to review and align it with the country’s emerging needs and realities.
“CBE is a noble idea, but we must constantly assess whether it’s truly serving our children well and preparing them for the future,” he said.
The MP’s remarks come amid ongoing national discussions on the effectiveness of the CBE and growing concerns over educational inequalities in marginalized regions.
