Western MP opposes Govt’s plan to close children’s homes

Kanduyi MP John Makali is dismayed by the recent announcement that the government will shut down private homes for destitute children in eight years.

Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary (CS) Florence Bore’s announced this, suggesting that those homes that do not meet the requirements of the law as envisioned by the Children’s Act 2022 will be closed within that period.

Addressing the press at Baptist Girls Secondary School in Bungoma after handing over a Ksh3 million cheque for development, Makali said the government should instead encourage the creation of more centres to cushion vulnerable children.

“Those homes were established with an intended purpose,” he said, arguing that the abodes play a pivotal role in addressing the difficulties that disadvantaged children face.

“The centres offer vital services for children who have been neglected and in the long run, they will regain their good health and proceed with their education,” he disagreed with the CS.

Makali revealed that they will soon debate a bill that supports the creation of more children’s homes in the country, in direct contradiction of the government’s position.
