Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has launched a scholarship programme, funded by NG-CDF, for Form 4 leavers interested in taking Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses to equip them with skills for self-employment.
Speaking while issuing a cheque of Ksh 1.7 million for the first cohort of 67 students at Manyatta Technical and Vocational College (TVC), Mukunji said technical education was one of the very few fields that have guaranteed income to those who gain marketable skills.
While urging parents to enroll their children who did not qualify for university, Mukunji stated that many students who went to university for various degrees were currently working in technical fields further proving the essence of technical education.
“In this constituency alone, we are constructing two state-of-art stadiums, close to 40 kilometers of tarmac roads and we will later launch an affordable housing project,” he noted adding that the projects will require huge workforce from young people with requisite skills.
The outspoken legislator said Manyatta TVC will be equipped with computers and internet so that learners can have access to online jobs they will earn from as they continue with their education.
“We are going to equip this institution with computers and internet so that these students can work online,” he said.
The College Principal David Ngari lauded the scholarship programme, saying it will go a long way in increasing the enrollment and retention of students.
“Our students come from the surrounding community and some have challenges of raising school fees but that will be a thing of the past with this programme,” he said.
Dr. Jackson Ngari from the Anglican Church called on Form 4 leavers to take advantage of the opportunity.
