MP in Kisii increases bursary funding to KSh70 million to meet demand

A Member of Parliament in Kisii County has increased bursary fund from KSh47 m to KSh70 to cope with the increasing demand for orphans and children from poor families.

Nyaribari Chache lawmaker Zaheer Jhanda said the fund will ease the burden of parents and guardians as well as enhance  education standards and performance in examinations.

The MP appealed to parents and needy learners to apply for the fund in time to enable the bursary committee process the disbursements in time to avoid inconveniences.

He asked school Principals to highlight challenges their schools are facing and submit requests to the National Government Constituency Fund (NG-CDF) committee for consideration.

“Some school Principals apply for projects in piece meals. The Committee wants to know the projects each school wants to be allocated funds,” Jhanda said at St Peter’s Secondary School during a public meeting.

The MP, flanked by Ibeno Ward Representative Steve Arika and school Principal Richard Nyagaka said the constituency gets KSh180 million a year for CDF, adding that he was set to utilize the funds to improve infrastructure in learning institutions and roads for easy movement.

He decried increasing unemployment in the area, saying that he has launched a programme to support jobless youth secure jobs in foreign countries to eke a living and ease their suffering.

The number of students who graduate from colleges and universities is high amid shrinking job opportunities and it is necessary for leaders to support the graduates secure jobs abroad, he said.

“I urge the Committee tasked with vetting the youth to ensure they select beneficiaries from across the constituency for fairness,” the MP said, emphasizing, he has secured 800 slots for youth from his area in Qatar.

He further appealed to beneficiaries to work hard, embrace discipline and use some of the funds to educate their siblings to enhance their education and transition from primary, secondary, colleges and universities.
