Education stakeholders have been urged to come to the aid of students and parents at Moi Suba Girls High School in Suna West constituency of Migori county where an inferno razed down a makeshift dormitory.

Suna West Member of Parliament Hon Peter Francis Masara noted that due to hard economic times, the parents of the students whose belongings were completely destroyed in the fire incident at the school need assistance to keep their children in school.

“We are living in hard economic times and it won’t be easy for parents to start budgeting afresh to purchase items for their children who lost their belongings in the fire. I call upon every stakeholder to  support the parents and students of Moi Suba Girls High school,” said Masara.

Masara pointed out that since nothing had been salvaged during the incident which occured hours to the students resuming for second term, parents had been pushed to the drawing board to budget for every single item their children needed to be in school.

“Every single item that was kept in the dormitory by the students as they closed school for holiday was destroyed by the fire and with schools opening, it’s important that we move swiftly to cushion them,” he noted.

He was speaking at the institution where he donated a sum of a hundred thousand shillings to help in the purchase of mattresses for the affected students.

“I have brought 100,000 shillings to help in the purchase of mattresses for the affected students but this is still not enough especially with the damage caused by the fire and therefore there is need to get more help from education stakeholders even as I push for the release of emergency fund to cushion the school more,” he added.

He also called on well-wishers not to shy away from giving any form of available assistance towards supporting the parents and students at the school so as to normalize the situation even as investigations continue.

“As the police continue with their investigations into the matter, I urge all of us with interests in promoting education to come to the aid of this institution by offering assistance to the affected students,” Masara said.

He later took time to supervise an ongoing construction of a multipurpose hall project at the institution by the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).

The inferno affected 68 students in form one and two who were boarding in the dormitory.

Some of the items lost in the fire were books, uniforms, beddings and storage boxes among other personal effects.
