MP decries congestion in Mwingi Central schools

As excited learners return to their classrooms ten months later, social distance rule in public schools within Mwingi has seemed to be a tall order.

Yesterday, Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi raised his concern over the congestion in schools in his constituency.

Mulyungi said that even before the closure of schools in March 2020, the population in learning institutions had already outdone the available classrooms.

“Kitui schools are and were crowded, therefore, observing social distance rule is a total nightmare,” he said.

The legislature, however, called upon the government to deliver its promise for easy running of school operations.

He pointed out that all Covid-19 protocols should be enforced which he clearly stated may remain a dream in most Kitui County schools due to overpopulation in public schools.

According to the MP, the social distance rule will only be possible if learners will study under the trees as earlier on posed by the Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof. George Magoha.

He, however, faulted the government for failing to put up new classrooms for public primary and secondary schools in Mwingi Central as planned.

The legislator also asked the government to intervene on the issue of school fees citing that the pendulum of life swung parents into an uncomfortable zone economic-wise at the spark of the Covid-19.
