MP, college sign MoU to train youth through Ajira Digital programme

The youth in Kiambu constituency have been urged to enrol in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges to acquire skills so they can tap into the numerous opportunities in the job market.

Speaking at Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) in Kiambu town during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the institution and the area Member of Parliament’s (MP) Office, MP Machua Waithaka said that the partnership will ensure youth source jobs under the Ajira Jitume programme.

“We are on course to make Kiambu constituency greater. Together we will start training youth in outsourcing jobs under the Ajira Jitume programme and also take tailor-made courses that will equip our young people with skills and competencies for the current job market,” Machua said.

Machua said that he will use NG-CDF funds to pay for school fees to applicants who want to pursue short courses at KIST.

“We are encouraging those who did not join universities to take up technical courses and we will start with KIST where we have a budget through NG-CDF to pay school fees for applicants taking short courses,” he said.

The legislator said that most of the innovations in the country have emanated from polytechnics, reminding residents that the government has provided students loans for all students who enrol.

KIST Principal Sammy Kamau said it was evident that trainees were acquiring new possibilities for generating solutions as well as innovative skills needed for the country’s social and economic development.

He said the trainees had tapped into their innovative mindsets by strategically moulding the training received to enhance creativity, encourage collaboration and promote diversity.

“A good number of the innovations have focused on manufacturing, with the aim of automating Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) processes,” Kamau said.

The Ajira Digital Programme is a Government initiative launched and driven by the Ministry of ICT and the Digital Economy.
