Nyatike Member of Parliament Tom Odege has urged locals to join efforts in instilling discipline among learners so as to curb the rising cases of fire infernos in schools.
Speaking during a church service and funds drive held at Pentecostal Fellowship Gospel Church Nyakweri in North Kadem ward in Migori County, Odege urged locals to support school managers in discouraging their children from torching resources.
‘Students who want to strike should do it along the streets outside the school compounds.
Torching of buildings has a negative impact on the development of a society and therefore, we must all join efforts towards curbing this vice in our children.” Said Odege.
He asked teachers not to accept, admit or tolerate indiscipline learners in schools.
‘Such learners are fond of attacking teachers or torching infrastructure in schools. The fact that parents no longer contribute towards infrastructure development in schools doesn’t give them the confidence of failing to encourage their children to shun from destroying school property,’ he lamented.
He also warned parents not to plead with him to intervene with school administrators on behalf of students who have been suspended because of indiscipline cases.
“Let us not tolerate children who contribute towards destruction of infrastructure that took us ages to build up. Let’s encourage them to embrace dialogue and peaceful means of solving issues so as not to degrade the growth of the community.” He added.
The legislator echoed the directive by Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha that students who take part in destruction of school facilities will be arrested and charged before courts of law.
