The improvement in performance in the 2020 national examinations in Othaya Sub County has been attributed to focused leadership in the running of schools.

Othaya Member of Parliament (MP) Gichuki Mugambi said secondary schools in Othaya were ranked position one in Nyeri county up from position seven in 2017.

Nyeri County has eight sub counties which are Othaya, Mukurwe-ini, Tetu, Nyeri Central, Mathira East, Mathira West, Kieni East and Kieni West.

Primary schools also improved to position two after registering an improvement in mean score to 276 up  from 230.

He said Othaya Sub County has a unique model where the education sector is driven by old boys and girls from schools in Othaya.

‘Most primary schools are led by Board of Management (BOM) members who are successful former students of the schools,’ he added.

He said the National Government –Constituency Development Fund kitty is being used to improve physical infrastructure in all schools including renovation of classrooms, building of modern toilets, installation of water harvesting equipment and improvement of other infrastructure in all the 56 primary schools in the constituency.

Mugambi, who is a member of the education committee in parliament, also said that despite the pressure of 100 percent transition to secondary school, every child will be given an opportunity to join secondary school.
