Yatta Member of Parliament, Robert Basil wants Primary and Secondary Schools heads to ensure total coverage of ground water reservoirs within their school compounds to reduce incidents of children drowning.
His call came after two children of Grade Six and Seven died on Sunday afternoon after they were trapped inside the deep underground tank at Kionyweni Primary School in Mathingau sub-location, when they attempted to swim.
Basil said that if the water tanks at schools are fenced, the danger of children tempted to swim will have been prevented, saying that at the same time it will help in addressing the related incidents of drowning.
“I am appealing to schools head teachers to urgently fence off the water tanks which are open at their school compounds to prevent further deaths,” the lawmaker told journalists yesterday at Matuu town.
He also sent his message of condolence to the families of the two children saying that it was a big loss, adding that his heart was pained by the it.
“I send my condolences to the families of the two children and the villagers in general. Our prayers and thoughts are with them during this time of mourning,” he added.
Basil asked parents to be particularly vigilant on school-going children to avoid such tragedies.
